Skelton Tower Walk

Directions:

Drive to Levisham, watching for pedestrians walking on the windy, steep road to the village. Drive through the Village and take the left-hand road, heading toward Levisham Station (with the pub on your right as you drive by). A short journey from here (maybe 3 mins or so) on a small single-track road (and a steep 20% grade with a cliff drop) will bring you to the Levisham Moors and the start of the walk. The ‘Welcome to Levisham Moors’ board sign marks the start of the walk. Park on the edge of the moors nearby (Post Code YO18 8HU)

Description:

The walk to Skelton Tower is one of the most rewarding short routes in the North York Moors, combining open moorland views with a striking historic landmark. Starting from Levisham or nearby moorland parking spots, the route gently winds across heather-clad landscapes, with wide skies and sweeping vistas typical of this part of Yorkshire. The tower itself—an elegant 19th-century hunting lodge built for the Skelton estate—stands dramatically on the edge of a ridge, making it a perfect focal point for the walk. As you approach Skelton Tower, the views open out across Newton Dale and the surrounding valleys, offering fantastic photo opportunities in every season. The walk is relatively easy to moderate, depending on your chosen route, and is especially popular with walkers looking for a quieter alternative to busier trails. On a clear day, the sense of space and tranquillity is hard to beat, making this a standout circular walk for visitors exploring the moors.
